RENOVATING YOUR BATHROOM? HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

By Paul Hodkinson

Is your bathroom looking a little dated? Does its colour scheme resemble something out of a low budget film from the seventies?

If you answered yes, it’s definitely time to renovate. To help make sure you get your reno right the first time around, here’s our quick guide to the Australian bathroom renovation.

THE TOTAL COST

Before you begin your renovations, always decide on a maximum spend and communicate that number with whoever is managing the renovation.

If you’re organising the whole show, get several quotes from tradies before committing, and keep detailed and up to date records of costs throughout the entire process. If you notice that the cost of the project is trending above budget you can quickly make changes or adjust to suit.

The average cost of a bathroom renovation can vary, but according to Archicentre yours should set you back between $10,000 and $25,000. The size of the bathroom, the finishes you want (luxury, standard or budget) and the design will all affect the final cost.

TIME TAKEN

The time taken to complete your renovations is again influenced by the size, finish and extent of the changes you’re making. However, it’s important that you have a rough idea of how long they will take as you may have to rent accommodation or shower elsewhere while the process is underway.

If you’re organising the entire project yourself you may have to organise the following tradesmen to do their part:

  • Carpenter
  • Electrician
  • Plumber
  • Plasterer/Renderer
  • Waterproofer
  • Tiler
  • Cabinet maker
  • Stone mason
  • Glazier
  • Caulker
  • Painter

This could take months if you’re unorganised, the entire process is usually finished within four or five weeks. Either hire a capable renovations provider who will manage the process from start to finish, or ensure that you take considerable time and care to ensure that the process is well organised.

DESIGN AND STYLE

When renovating your bathroom you should always consider if the design fits with the rest of your home. Next think about the latest bathroom trends – including these in your design will ensure it stays fresh for as long as possible and adds value to your property.

Open plan designs, timber accents on walls and cabinets, natural light and textured tiles – are just a few examples of design elements that could really lift your bathroom’s look. They may also make your bathroom a more functional and relaxing space, changes that will certainly make it more attractive to potential buyers.

VALUE ADDED

Leading industry experts are unanimous in their opinions about bathroom renovation – when they’re done right they certainly add value to your property. If you’re considering selling in the next year or two, bathroom renovations are certainly worth thinking about, as they could help net you a handsome sale price.

If not, considered and well-executed renos will certainly increase your enjoyment of your home – which is the most important thing after all.
